40 – 49 year old Health Check

In keeping with the high level of preventative care we provide at East Ryde Family Medical Practice, we also offer the Government recommended 45 – 49 year old health check. This health check focuses on preventative care for patients in this age bracket, the aim is to detect and prevent chronic disease and enable early intervention. The health check would include:

Taking down: Past Medical history, Family History, Social History, Allergies

Discussion of: Smoking, Alcohol, Nutrition, Physical activity, Mental Health, Osteoporosis

Examination of: Body weight, height, waist, BMI, Blood Pressure, Skin Check

Tests Taken / Ordered: Fasting Blood Test, Serology, ECG, Cervical Screen Test

Once the information has been gathered, your GP will identify any health issues and recommend the appropriate follow up, provide advice and strategies to achieve a better lifestyle. Please expect to be at the surgery for at least an hour for your initial appointment, and it is encouraged you return for your results appointment.

When booking your appointment please inform our reception staff that it is for a 45-49 health check so an appropriate amount of time can be allocated (we recommend booking an early morning appointment so that a fasting blood test can be completed).

Men often put off going to the Doctor and tend to neglect their personal health until it’s all too late. Men are encouraged to make appointments for a Men’s Health Check, especially once they are over 40 years of age. This is an age where potential healths risks could be identified before they become a problem.

The Men’s health check includes comprehensive preventive screening for:
• Cardiovascular risk including blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.
• Prostate cancer
• Bowel cancer screening.
• Sexual Health
• Anxiety and depression.
• Skin Cancer checks
• Lifestyle advice
• Weight Loos
• Smoking cessation

Our procedures such as excisions do require a longer appointment and therefore are booked at specific times of the day, so please advise reception to ensure adequate placement and time is allowed with your doctor. We recommend booking a review appointment first so a plan of action may be made, in some cases you will need to be referred onto a a specialist.

Skin Cancer Checks

We are very lucky to live in a beautiful country like Australia. However we are known to have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.

Prevention, early detection and treatment of skin cancers is essential. You should check your own skin at least every 2-3 months for any changes, but it is strongly recommended that you have a full body skin check with your doctor every 12-24 months.

Our practice is prepared for any necessary procedures to be undertaken onsite – such as treatment of sun spots, skin lesion biopsies and more extensive wide surgical excisions of skin cancers. In some instances your doctor might need to refer you for more specialised care depending on your biopsy results.

If you wish to have a skin check with one of our doctors, please call us to book an appointment. It is very important that you mention to the receptionist that it is for a skin check so that a 30 minute appointment can be arranged with the appropriate doctor. Cancer Council Australia Sun Smart

Many of these risks can be reduced through precautions taken before, during and after travel. We are accredited by NSW Health to provide Yellow Fever vaccinations, and we stock most travel-related vaccines on site. If you require travel medical advice or vaccinations, please contact us and let the receptionists know that your appointment is for travel and advise:

  • Where you are going?
